4. Thoreau says that some of his young fellow townsmen have had the misfortune to inherit a farm, a house, or other livestock and equipment. most people would think that inheriting such things would be good. Why does Thoreau think that it is bad? Do you agree? Why or why not?
Thoreau thinks that inheriting a farm or other material possessions that involve work to upkeep them are trivial and just another aspect of life that is keeping the modern man from being simple and one with nature. Thoreau believes that men should not be like working ants, and instead allow time for their own pleasures as they see them. I think that inheriting a house or livestock would be lovely for one who likes work or would live in and keep the house in running order, but I also agree with Thoreau, as once something has been inherited, it can easily become a burden to take care of, taking valuable time from one's own interests or livelihood.
